the rare saturday afternoon spent together

About a month ago Jon had a whole Saturday off from work, and being the good sport that he is, he indulged me beyond my wildest dreams by going to see the stuffed whale at the Museum of Natural History, one of my favorites in all the city because of the dinosaur bones mostly, followed by a walk in the park.

We got there about an hour before the museum closed which made Jon happy since it put a time limit on how long we could spend there. I’ve learned that Jon will go to a museum, one gallery at a time. We headed straight to the basement to see the work of the taxidermist in the Milstein Hall of Ocean Life. Suspended from the ceiling is a gigantic life size Blue Whale.

The pictures don’t turn out great, with all the dim blue light down there, but it was really incredible to see it’s size. Anyone gone whale watching? I’m intrigued now. Next time I’m off the coast of Alaska, I’ll be all over that. The other animals that topped the fascinating list were the penguins, the walrus, the narwhal (Jon quotes Elf here, “Hey Buddy! Hope you find your Dad!”), and the giant clam.

We walked across the park and followed the sound of a live music concert and discovered a crazy lady singing a song about going out with a guy and trying things like skiing and opera and sushi…turns out she has an album and she put on a great show. She was a lot of fun and kind of reminded me of Miss Friendly (shout-outs to the Healdsburg Ward).

There were a ton of people in row boats on the lake, which made us want to give it a go, everyone else was thinking the same thing and the line was super long, so we went over to the pond and raced sail boats for an hour or so.

Then we went and sat in the Sheep’s Meadow and watched the sun set behind the Time Warner Center before walking home. It was a splendid was to spend the afternoon.
