When Jon got a job last year we celebrated by getting a new HDTV. We did not, however, get cable until just before we moved to the UWS. We watched whatever was broadcast in high definition all spring and summer long which means we took in a lot of golf and tennis. This year, as cable subscribers with a ton of viewing options, we haven’t followed golf, but we do enjoy tennis. So when my thoughtful boss Steve came by on Tuesday with great tickets for the US Open this week in Queens we were pretty darn excited. We went last night – Jon got off at 5!! – and spent a great evening in Flushing Meadows, Queens.
Lindsay Davenport blew Alisa Kleybanova away in two short matches followed by the powerful Andy Roddick routing Fabrice Santoro. Men’s tennis is so exciting because it’s so fast. Andy is known for having a ridiculously powerful serve and forehand and last night he did not dissapoint serving at 147 mph; his record is 150. By 10:30, when they were in their second set, the crowd was getting a little rowdy, when the heretofore polite crowd suddenly shouted at Andy to “Knock his head off.” Very funny. It was actually kind of a sad game; Fabrice is great, but at 35 he couldn’t keep up with Andy. Interestingly, Lindsay at 32 beat the pants off 19 year old Alisa.
We had a grand old time and were grateful to have great seats for free. Next year we are going to try and take a day off and go closer to the finals so we can see our tennis crushes, Roger Federer and Maria Sharapova.

I just wish that Roddick was still dating Mandy Moore. They were such a cute couple.
I know, right?! Now he's engaged to a model here in NYC.
I like the balls
