young frankenstein

When Andrew was here we also went to see Young Frankenstein and I just wanted to put down my thoughts about it. It was Mel Brooks, so I didn’t expect a whole lot, but really I felt like it wasn’t very good at all. The jokes were all forced and could have easily been followed by a cymbal’s “Da-dum-dum-ching” and the songs were forgettable.

What was fantastic though, were the costumes, the colors especially reminded me of the kind of detail paid attention to in productions like Wicked, as well as the staging. The back drops and props were elaborate and seamless and colorful and detailed. They stood in stark juxtaposition to the silly dialogue and lack luster numbers. (Did I use those words correctly?)

I also really liked the theater. It was large and there wasn’t a bad seat in the house.

So I decided two things; I want to see more plays at the Hilton Theater, and I want to see more plays with Robin Wagner as the set designer.

The best part of the show was when a group of about 60 teenage girls from a Catholic girls school came in and sat all around us. Andrew enjoyed that very much.
