children's museum - miracle mile

Honestly, I ran through my to do list pretty fast. So Thursday we loafed around the hotel in the morning. Pretty sure this was the morning we ordered room service at like 6am. Other mornings we'd run out to Au Bon Pain or Pret (I officially love Pret after this trip) so it was nice to have a morning where we could just be lazy and watch cartoons. Thank you MLV for the room service both times we used it. We stayed at a JW Marriot which made it an awkward place to drag tired kids into at the end of the day (so much echoing off the marble lobby) but a fantastic place to order room service. Everything was tasty.

So I decided we were going to the Children's Museum at Navy Pier. But I also decided,  no more excuses. I needed to eat at Frontera. I'd read about it, and came to find Rick Bayless is like one of the Mexican food chefs in the nation so I got a little obsessed. I decided my best chances with the kids was to hit of 7 on State,  the cafeteria at Macy's that features local restaurants as like, outposts. Anyway, there's a Frontera Fresco there so we went there for lunch. Long line, but SO WORTH IT. I mean this isn't even the real restaurant and it was unbelievable. I bought a bunch of stuff to split with the kids, tamale, tacos, quesadilla, guacamole, chips, salad, beans and rice, prickly pear juice. All of it was fantastic. The kids licked their plates. Rebecca was eating guac with a spoon. Jacob didn't bring up McDonalds once. As soon as I left I was thinking about going to the actual restaurant for dinner. (We ended up at Chick fil A with Jon this time). I really am now on a hunt for delicious Mexican in the city. Pay attention Jon, date nights from here on out will involve corn tortillas whether you like it or not!

This is the dumbest post I've every written about Mexican food from a food court. This is what you've done to me Rick Bayless.

Alright. On to the photo dump. Blurriest photos from the trip will be in this post.

This place was fantastic. Better than Brooklyn. In the same league as the Bay Area Discovery Museum, ie rad cubed. As in rad x rad x rad. So great, we had to go twice and we still didn't get it all done.

Chicago Fire!!
Rebecca was asleep for the first hour while Jacob played in the fire exhibit. It was no joke. Jacob was in heaven.

Do you see his little mouth making fire truck noises?

The button pusher, pushing buttons.

Driving truck

Hoses

Safety Cones

Thought about sliding down the pole several times, but didn't do it.

One nice shot once Rebecca woke up.

Vet's and Animals

Rebecca's tail

Jacob's tail

He didn't like that I'd interrupted his playtime to take a picture. The crate behind them was their office where they took care of the animals. All of them were named Roxy.

They had a tree thing with cat toys hanging off it for kids to paw at. Rebecca loved it although there was really only one she could reach on her own.

Eggs in a nest. Actually playing together.

Camping
This is the kind of outdoor stuff I can really get into. The great outdoors, indoors. We were in the room for 45 minutes. For the first time all week I found an adult to chat with while Jacob played her her son, Nathan.

The woman needs a play kitchen for Christmas. She played the in cabin for the longest time.

Fishing.

This was part of a Honey I Shrunk the Kids type backyard exhibit. But it wasn't in a gated room so we didn't stay there long because Rebecca kept running oot.

Giant matching dot game, as we like to call Dominos.

What? We're inside but we can see the sky? Mind blown.

Kids town

The bus included Raffi singing Wheels on the Bus. The kids loved it.

She was obsessed with this shopping cart. It wasn't crowded so I didn't have to make her share.

We were here for several hours before meeting Jon for dinner at Chick Fil A and brief stroll down the Miracle Mile. We were going to eat at this pizza place my new mom friend recommended, Pizanos, but Jon wasn't in the mood for pizza.

Water tower. One of like two buildings in downtown Chicago to survive the Great Fire. Shake your fist at Mrs. O'Leary's cow. Oh, maybe that's why there was a cow statue on the sidewalk in that other picture...  There was a really cute little firehouse nearby I wanted to take a picture of but we spotted the bus we needed and ran.
